Johannesburg - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will investigate claims of corruption involving Tlokwe mayor Maphetle Maphetle, her office said on Monday.
"The public protector will investigate and will add the complaint to the ongoing investigation against [the] Tlokwe municipality," Madonsela's spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi said.
The Democratic Alliance handed a forensic report to Madonsela, which it commissioned when it took over the municipality for a short time last year.
According to the report, the council irregularly bought a R736 000 customised Mercedes Benz for Maphetle.
There was also alleged abuse of the disaster management fund and poverty relief fund.
It was recommended in the report that formal disciplinary action be taken against the mayor and officials.
"The DA trusts that the Public Protector will come to a fair conclusion about the suitability of Mr Maphetle to hold office and the ANC’s overall mismanagement of Tlokwe municipal funds," DA MP Juanita Terblanche said.
"The ANC’s Tlokwe leadership has already showed that it is not serious about fighting corruption as they have dismissed the forensic report’s findings outright."
Last month, the DA laid charges against Maphetle in Potchefstroom.
In November, African National Congress factions at the municipality passed a motion of no confidence in Maphetle.
He was replaced by the DA's Annette Combrink when she defeated ANC candidate Lucky Tsagae by 20 votes to 19.
Maphetle was returned as mayor of the Tlokwe municipality in February, after he defeated Combrink by 31 votes to 21.
