"At about 01:00 this morning [Monday] a group of protesters barged into Prince Mshiyeni Hospital in Umlazi and burnt a car belonging to a worker at the hospital," said Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge.
They proceeded to the Mangosuthu Highway at 05:00 and stopped traffic going into and out of the township.
"At this stage, the highway has been closed. The protesters have barricaded the road with a fridge and scrap cars. Police were on the scene and have started removing the barricade," he said.
There was a mob on the road. No arrests had been made.
The Congress of SA Trade Unions and the Independent Labour Caucus announced a nationwide strike about a week ago after rejecting the government's offer of a seven percent salary increase and a R700 a month housing allowance.
They are demanding an 8.6% increase and R1000 housing allowance.
