Radiation scare at Boksburg factory

Cape Town - A Boksburg scrap metal factory was cordoned off after a bin containing radioactive material was discovered on Thursday.

Ekurhuleni disaster management and emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi told News24 that an employee of SA Metal allegedly sold metal to Sarie Scrap Metals Company illegally.

“SA Metal located the truck used by the employee with a tracking device and notified police,” Ntladi said.

EWN reported that a six cubic metre bin was discovered in the workshop. It apparently contained a radioactive by-product of mining operations, the exact nature of which was unclear.

“Sarie premises were evacuated, cordoned off and emergency services were activated,” Ntladi said.

“Specialists from the Necsa [Nuclear Energy Corporation South Africa] went in with detectors.”

According to Ntladi, radiation was within the acceptable exposure rate at 0.5 millisieverts.

No injuries or fatalities were recorded.
