SA won't entertain MDC suggestion

Cape Town – A suggestion by the Zimbabwean Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) for Zimbabweans with fraudulently obtained identity books to receive SA citizenship status will not be entertained by the South African government, said a spokesperson.

"The MDC cannot have its cake and eat it," Home Affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa told News24 on Friday.

Mamoepa said an agreement had been made between the South African and Zimbabwean governments – the latter represented by officials from both the Zanu-PF and the MDC who are part of a unity government.

Home Affairs announced recently that Zimbabweans using fraudulent South African identity books would be granted amnesty and given immigrant status.

Mamoepa said the South African government had already held discussions with "representatives from the Zimbabwean expatriate community in South Africa" and that the expatriates were "rallying Zimbabweans to comply with South African law".

Sapa had reported earlier on Friday that an MDC spokesperson had said granting citizenship status to Zimbabweans with illegal IDs would make it easier for them to deal with issues such as receiving property loans, registering for schooling, opening businesses and applying for government tenders.
