Die Burger reported on Monday that Burgert van der Westhuizen, 74, an open water swimmer, said if a shark took him it may be the best way to go, because it meant he would be in the sea, doing what he loved the most.
Van der Westhuizen was in the water at Lookout Point on Friday morning when a shark attacked him. He was the first shark fatality in the Eastern Cape surfing town.
He regularly swam in the sea at Jeffreys Bay, and was well known on the beach. According to Die Burger, two bouquets of flowers – one including his photograph – were placed on the beach near where the attack occurred.
The Cape Times reported that the close-knit town was in shock and that Van der Westhuizen's wife was traumatised.
