Skydiver miraculously dodges meteorite

Cape Town - What's the last thing you would expect to go wrong while skydiving? We'd be willing to bet that almost being hit by a meteorite definitely wouldn't cross many minds.

However, this is exactly what happened to Anders Helstrup, a member of the Oslo Parachute Club when he jumped out of a small plane that had taken off from Østre Æra Airport in Hedmark.

Check out the video.

NRK
reports that Helstrup, wearing a wing suit and two cameras fixed to his helmet, released his parachute and, on the way down, suddenly realised that something strange was happening.

However, being mid-fall, he didn't pay too much attention.

It was only after landing that Helstrup decided to watch the video footage and spotted what looked like a rock hurtling right past him.

For some reason the incident really bugged Helstrup and he finally decided to contact the Natural History Museum in Oslo to find out if there was any possibility that the rock could have been a meteorite.

He showed the film to a number of experts, who were convinced that the rock was exactly what Helstrup thought it was.

According to geologist, Hans Amundsen, the shape is typical of a meteorite, displaying a fresh fracture surface on one side and a rounding on the other.

When a meteoroid enters the Earth’s atmosphere it forms a blazing track across the sky and becomes a meteor.

When the light disappears, the meteorite enters the stage called 'dark flight,'and falls straight down.

Helstrup's video footage is the first ever that manages to capture a meteorite in this 'dark flight' mode.
