The problem with Bafana Bafana

The glaring problem with our National Football team:the coach can't be wasting time teaching the players the basics of football at national level.

We keep on talking about it but the only solution to the problem is to have junior football academies right around the country, and invest in certified junior coaches who are all trained at a well structured South African Football Academy for Coaches. You can't rely on every football team and coaches setting up their own academies and doing their own thing. The top football nations are successful exactly because they apply this national strategy.

This gives players the opportunity to grow into a national environment that allows them to understand what is expected from them to represent their country. It also instills a huge sense of pride and patriotism in the players, a sense that says that playing for your country places a huge responsibility on the player, but it also bestows the highest honour on the player. These values can only be taught in a well co-ordinated National Football Academy, that is spread across the country.

This is the one thing that Carlos Alberto Pareira suggested to SAFA when he accepted the coaching position of Bafana Bafana before the  2010 Football World Cup.After the very successful 2010 Football World Cup in our country we were made to believe that huge funds would be invested in a 2010 Legacy Project that was meant for football development.

Instead, what we experience at local football level is a lame attempt from SAFA, handing out some resources to the 52 Football Districts around the country, without clear guidelines and strategy to sustain football development. Is SAFA really in charge of Football development in South Africa or are they just maintaining it and running it.....into the ground.

SAFA are you listening???
