Two teens missing off Camps Bay

Cape Town - Two 16-year-old youths are missing, presumed drowned, off Camps Bay beach in Cape Town, the NSRI said on Wednesday.

"It was confirmed that both 16-year-olds had disappeared beneath the surf," said National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

He said a group of pupils from RB Dithupe Primary School. in Zeerust, North West, went to the beach for a swim as part of a school tour on Wednesday.

"According to teachers at the scene, one of the learners, a 15-year-old boy, [was] swept out to sea by rip currents," Lambinon said.

The two 16-year-olds tried to rescue him, but were also swept away.

The 15-year-old was rescued by an unknown man and was taken to hospital.

However an extensive sea, air and shore search, including free dive rescue swimmers and police divers, found no sign of the other two and they were thought to have drowned.

The search had been suspend and would resume at first light on Thursday, said Lambinon.

He said the police were investigating.
