Uganda's Toko dies

Kampala - Uganda's former number two, Colonel Wilson Toko, died in a car crash on Sunday along with three other people when his car was involved in a head-on collision, police said.

Police spokesperson Asuman Mugenyi said Toko, who was heading for the eastern Ugandan city of Jinja, died on the way to hospital after the accident which occurred at Bulumagi, seven kilometres from Jinja.

"Colonel Toko was trying to overtake another vehicle when he collided head on with another car carrying Christine Kania, a member of the constitutional review commission, who was coming from the opposite direction," Mugenyi said.

Kania and two other people in her official car died on the spot, while her police guard survived with injuries. Toko's wife Esther was also admitted to Jinja hospital after the crash.

Toko was deputy head of state during General Tito Okello's short-lived six-month military regime that toppled president Milton Obote in July 1985.

Current President Yoweri Museveni toppled Okello and appointed Colonel Toko, one-time commander of the Uganda airforce under dictator Idi Amin, to head the national carrier, now-defunct Uganda Airlines.

He was later fired by Museveni, allegedly for aborting a flight already airborne because he had arrived late at the airport to catch it. - Sapa-AFP
