Pretoria - The Gauteng premier has warned of a serial killer targeting elderly women in Mabopane, north of Pretoria.
Premier Nomvula Mokonyane told the Sowetan that three elderly women had been killed in the same way.
She spoke after the body of Francinah Mopelong, 72, was found in her home where she had been stabbed to death.
Her neighbour was also stabbed last year and another woman, who lived nearby, was killed in the same manner a month ago.
"We must escalate these cases beyond the police station. We have a serial killer on the loose, there are several common things that happened in the cases," Mokonyane said on Thursday.
Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant Colonel Mzwandile Petros has been asked to handle the three murder cases.
Mokonyane said the elderly needed to be protected and that serious action was needed.
Gary Mopelong said the family was shocked by his mother’s murder.
