Johannesburg - The murder of an elderly woman and her two children suspected of witchcraft in Lusikisiki was condemned by the chairperson of the women's caucus of the Eastern Cape legislature, Koliswa Fihlani, on Friday.
In a statement, Fihlani said she believed the murder of the Mayihlome family was "symptomatic of cultural stereotypes against poor and vulnerable women".
Drug abuse and violation of the rights of women and children were at the core of these killings, she said.
Fihlani and MEC Pemmy Majodina would visit the remaining family members on Friday afternoon.
Only two children aged between 2 and 4 survived the attack on Thursday evening.
Captain Mduduzi Godlwana said the 65-year-old woman, her 24-year-old son and daughter, 20, were shot and hacked to death in their home at 22:00.
A 30-year-old man was arrested in the Mayalweni locality after he was apparently pointed out by a witness who was in the house at the time of the attack.
Police expect to make more arrests as five men were involved in the shooting, Godlwana said.
"They killed her because she was suspected of killing [the arrested man's] father though witchcraft."
The man would appear in the Lusikisiki Magistrate's Court on Monday, Godlwana said.
