'No proof' wife killed farmer husband

Bloemfontein - A Kimberley woman who is accused of killing her husband, a wealthy farmer, was released on her own recognisance by a local court.

Volksblad reported that Nico Botha was shot dead two years ago in his farmhouse.

Initial reports indicated a suicide but his wife Glaudina Botha, 62, was later arrested on suspicion of murder as her husband was found to have been shot twice in the head.

But a magistrate said the case against Botha was circumstantial and that there was no proof that she had planned a murder.

Botha’s legal defence said during the bail application that money was no motive for the murder as the family was wealthy and there were no financial problems.

He said the assumption that two shots indicated a premeditated act, should be rejected.

He said Botha was under tremendous strain; that there was a lot of tension in the family and that Botha was not speaking to her daughter who was currently living in the US.
