Johannesburg - A woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy on a pavement in Durban on Thursday, paramedics said.
ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the birth took place at noon on the corner of Umbilo and Canada roads.
"Paramedics arrived on the scene, and found the mother in between two cars and being covered by members of the public."
The baby boy was lying next to his mother, on a shirt and had been covered to protect him from the sun.
The mother was stabilised and the baby boy examined and covered in a blanket before being taken to hospital.
"The woman who is believed to be from the Congo was at full term when her water broke and she gave birth to her first healthy baby boy."
