Wounded man kills Pinetown home invader in shoot-out

Durban - A man man is recuperating in hospital after a gun battle with house robbers during an apparent home invasion in Pinetown last night.

The gunmen stormed the Caversham Road home and forced two siblings to lie on the floor, police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.

“Four [as yet unidentified] men entered a house and ordered two siblings aged 36 and 34 to... lie down. They removed jewellery, two plasma television screens, a laptop and three cell phones.”

Naicker said one of the victims managed to gain access to his own gun and opened fire on the robbers.

“The suspects returned fire, wounding the victim. One of the suspects was fatally wounded in the shootout while three managed to flee the scene unharmed. The victim was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.

“A case of armed robbery, attempted murder and an inquest docket were opened at Pinetown police station for investigation. The three suspects are still being sought by police,” Naicker added.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the robbery.

“We will leave no stone unturned in order to arrest the... suspects who fled,” she said.
