Cape Town Carnival: what you need to know

Grab the feathers, stock up on glitter and dress up in your most outrageous outfit, because it’s time for Cape Town Carnival again!

This year’s theme is ‘Imagine’ and, well, anything is possible!

The festival takes place on Saturday, 15 March with over 2 000 costumed performers, a spectacular floats parade and live musicians taking over Somerset Road in Green Point.  

The Fan Walk will be turned into a pedestrian walkway from 15:00 onward and the parade begins at 19:30.  

The official after party will take place under the Green Point Circe and will feature DJ Fresh and MiCasa.


Access to the family-friendly festival and end-party is absolutely free!

VIP tickets are available via and cost R600p/p. Price includes a spot on the raised VIP grandstand in the Gallows Hill Traffic Department parking lot that treats VIPs to prime views, secure parking, complimentary food and a 2014 Cape Town Carnival T-shirt.  

Food and drinks

There will be a wide array of food and drink stalls located along the Fan Walk, offering a wide array of delicious fare.

These are the road closures you should know about:

Road closures will affect public transport services and traffic flow in the Green Point and CBD areas from 14:00 on Saturday.  

If planning to attend the festival and travelling from the suburbs, it’s best to use public transportation to the Cape Town Train Station and then to travel to the start of the Fan Walk on foot or by bus.

Parking restrictions will be enforced in residential areas neighbouring the Fan Walk for the whole of Saturday.  

Motorists are advised to obey the signage.  

Limited parking is available for private vehicles in the stadium precinct, and parking tickets are available at the Cape Town Stadium.

On-street parking in the CBD will be available, but no additional security will be provided; parking tariffs will apply until 13:00, after which, on-street parking becomes free of charge.  Parade-goers can also park at the V&A Waterfront.  

Free parking is available at the Foreshore and at Culemborg.
