Johannesburg – Economic Freedom Fighters supporters clashed with police at the second sitting of the Johannesburg City council on Tuesday.
EFF supporters marched to council, causing the speaker Vasco da Gama to ask for a 10 minute recess so mayor Herman Mashaba could address the crowd.
Mashaba and EFF councillors left the council chambers to address protesters and receive a memorandum.
The protesters claimed over 100 EFF volunteers campaigned for the Democratic Alliance ahead of the August 3 local government elections. They demanded that the party pay each volunteer R2 000.
A commotion erupted when Mashaba told supporters he could not address them until he had received a detailed account of the situation.
Protesters and EFF councillors stopped Mashaba from leaving the area outside the legislature, were some of the protesters addressed the crowd.
Police clashed with protesters and used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
