This however is far from the final result as a significant number of votes still have to be counted.
With that 9%, the ANC is currently sitting at 33.41% and the EFF is at 3.8%.
The turnout of voters currently appears to be stronger in DA areas at 69%. In strong ANC areas, its voter turnout is currently 59%.
According to political analyst Dawie Scholtz, the DA is making inroads into township areas. In the 2011 local government elections only 2% of the vote went to the party, but that is currently up to 6% in this election.
"That makes quite a big difference," Scholtz said.
"With the ANC and DA, it looks like it is going to go down to the wire."
In the 2011 local government elections the ANC won the metro with 52.13% of the vote, while the DA had 40.24%.
