KZN education MEC to blame for bad matric results - Natu

Durban – KwaZulu-Natal’s education MEC needs to be held accountable for the province’s high matric failure rate and inability to reduce overcrowding in classrooms, teachers’ union Natu said on Wednesday.

"There is a need for the entire leadership of the department to be examined," National Teachers Union spokesperson Alan Thompson told reporters in Durban.

He criticised provincial department head Nkosinathi Sishi and Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni for failing to address the critical shortage of teachers in the province.

"Educators are overloaded and nothing has been done to address this. The province is not serious about reducing the number of learners in the classrooms. As it stands, the classrooms have been converted to mass meetings, with up to 80 pupils in a class."

Nkonyeni and her predecessor had failed to employ more teachers. The last time the province created posts for teachers was in 2009, he said.

The province’s matric pass rate dropped 9% to 60.7% in 2015
