Limpopo woman set alight during robbery

Polokwane - A Limpopo woman has been hospitalised after a man allegedly poured petrol over her and set her alight during an armed robbery.

The woman, who was burnt from her head to her waist, was recovering in hospital.

Police said the man, Calvin Maleka, robbed the woman at a bus stop in Seleteng village, south of Polokwane, on Tuesday before pouring petrol over her and setting her alight.

Maleka made a brief appearance at Thabamoopo Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. He was remanded in custody.

He has been charged with robbery and attempted murder.

It is alleged that Maleka was walking and carrying a five-litre container of petrol when he came across the woman.

Police spokesperson Manong Tshehla said the woman was robbed of her handbag.
