Local author gives back with book

A local author is using her love for photography to bring a smile to children’s faces.

Grazia Barletta has created and published a book using her own photographs combined with inspirational quotes and messages.

From the sales of this book, Moments That Have Captured My Heart, Barletta has raised funds for two charities. She is now hoping to raise funds in aid of a third.

Her first print run raised R14 000 for the St Joseph’s Home (SJH). The home is an intermediate paediatric care facility for children with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses. Children whose caregivers are unable to manage their child’s disease or who are poverty stricken are referred to St Joseph’s.

“I just wanted to give back as I have been very blessed in my life and have so much to be grateful for.

“I decided to donate the proceeds of my first print run to SJH as my late father was called Joseph and I felt it would be a special way to honour his memory, as well as having been to the home and volunteered with the children years ago,” she says.

The second print run of her book saw Barletta raising around R14 000 for the Missionaries of Charity Mother Teresa Home in Khayelitsha

“The home offers childcare and healthcare accommodation. They also visit the sick and take food parcels to those in need,” she says.

Now on her third print run, Barletta hopes to raise R9000 in funds for Nazareth House.

“This is a non-profit, charitable organisation which has served the communities in South Africa for over 130 years. The Sisters of Nazareth have opened their doors to the poorest of the poor in caring for the sick, destitute, aged and underprivileged, orphaned children. They change the lives of those who have no hope,” she says.

Moments That Have Captured My Heart is an expression of Barletta’s love for photography.

“I enrolled in a photography course and through this discovered my love for photography, which inspired me to start my own blog. There are no specific topics that I focus on but just stories that my photos tell. My photos inspired me to want to share them, and it was suggested to me that I print them into a coffee table book,” she says.

Copies of Moments That Have Captured My Heart are available at the Wordsworth stores in Sea Point and Garden Centre, as well as Oxford Stationary in Garden Centre, for R200. V Those interested in purchasing the book can also email graziabarletta1@gmail.com.
