A GROUP of dancers from the Defying Gravity Dance School is the only team who will represent the Eastern Cape at the international DanceStar competition in Croatia this month.
They qualified for the prestigious event when they took part in the DanceStar South Africa, Cape Town Qualifiers in October last year where international and local judges adjudicated and scored hundreds of routines from the best amateur dancers in South Africa.
More than 25 000 dancers from 30 countries across the globe competed in qualifying rounds and only a select few were invited to compete in various dance routines at the DanceStar Finals and World Dance Masters in Croatia.
The South African dance team has toured to Croatia for the last five years and has won the top awards three times.
The DanceStar World Tour and DanceStar Finals are organised by the European Dance Union (ESDU) and the South Africa Qualifying events are organised by SA Dance Talent.
The team from Defying Gravity Dance School, which is located in Walmer, will be flying to Croatia on May 20.
Defying Gravity Dance school’s co-owner Heidi Sampson said, “The girls work very hard and practice for hours on end. We are very excited to represent our country at the competition.”
The Defying Gravity team that will represent South Africa at the DanceStar Finals in Croatia are: Amber Katherine Freeman, Anika de Ridder, Carissa Pottas, Carla Gouws, Carli Muller, Demi-Rae Lee, Heidi Sampson, Ilandi Engelbrecht, Jani Ferreira, Kelly Schoeman, Laikin Leigh Horne, Lauren McCarthy, Lianca Geldenhuys, Linoyolo Fumba, Monique Bester, Monique Emma Alloway, Nicole Bird, Olivia Stevens, Shana de Villiers and Tamicah Tatum Hendricks.
