Madonsela wants more resources to probe 'state capture'

Johannesburg — Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has approached government for additional resources for her office's investigation of President Jacob Zuma's links with the Gupta family, her office confirmed on Tuesday.

"We have approached the National Treasury for funding in order to investigate complaints about alleged state capture," Madonsela's spokesperson Oupa Segalwe said.

He said although Madonsela's term in office ends in October, the team will continue the investigation with whoever succeeds her.

President Jacob Zuma's relationship with the Gupta family has been under scrutiny for months, since the reshuffling of Cabinet in December.

Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas said members of the Gupta family had offered him the job of finance minister before Nhlanhla Nene was sacked in December 2015.

However, the Guptas denied this, saying their family was being used for "political point scoring between rival factions within the ANC".

There have been widespread calls for Zuma to resign following the Constitutional Court ruling that he failed to uphold the Constitution when he did not comply with Madonsela's remedial action regarding payment for the upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.

After the judgment, Zuma apologised for the Nkandla matter in a televised address to the nation.
