Mozambique denies citizens are seeking refuge in Malawi

Maputo - Mozambican authorities have disputed reports of Malawian refugees fleeing their country due to political clashes, saying that the foreign citizens were merely migrants.

According to Nyasa Times, President Filipe Nyusi said that there was no war in Mozambique that warranted the fleeing of its citizens and that the reported 6 000 refugees that entered Malawi recently were exhibiting normal migrant behaviour.

Skirmishes between Mozambique's ruling Frelimo party and the opposition Renamo in strategic parts of the country have led to a mass exodus of civilians into Malawi.

According to one of the refugees living in Malawi, she fled Mozambique after she was raped for allegedly "shielding" Renamo rebels.

Another woman claimed that she witnessed the rape and death of a Mozambican citizen at the hands of between 20 and 30 soldiers in the country.

Frelimo has since refuted the claims.

A previous News24 article highlighted the plight of Mozambican refugees living in Malawian camps.

No government intervention, nor assistance from the United Nations has taken effect thus far, despite renewed calls to the international community to aid those in need.
