Durban - At least 11 people were arrested at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Westville campus on Tuesday.
The National Intervention Unit supported by SAPS and private security company MI7 raided the Oval Residence.
B.comm student Mondli Gasa, 22, told reporters he was injured during the raids and his girlfriend arrested.
“They hit me and punched me in my face. They took my girlfriend and arrested her. I was studying when they came to my room.”
Police detained a number of students during the raid, and released them after around 45 minutes.
Earlier on Tuesday, protesters at the university and authorities clashed several times. The conflict was isolated to the P-Block and Oval residences.
Police said at least three petrol bombs were thrown.
On Monday, female students tried to embark on a peaceful march inside the campus. Police stopped them, saying they were violating a high court order. This sparked conflict.
Protests to demand free tertiary education have entered their sixth week at the Westville campus.
