Kinshasa - The DRC's leading opposition candidate is being charged with recruiting mercenaries, according to an announcement made on state television.
The development was broadcast on Thursday a week after Moise Katumbi was summoned to court on the allegations.
Katumbi has announced his intent to run in November elections against long time incumbent President Joseph Kabila. The president's critics fear he will delay the vote in a bid to stay in power.
Jean-Joseph Mukendi Wa Mulumba, one of the attorneys representing Katumbi, told a private radio station in the capital that he didn't want to comment on the report until he had been officially notified of the charges.
Katumbi supporters believe that authorities want to arrest him so that he is unable to run in the upcoming vote.
