SA highly affected by global warming - CSIR

Cape Town - South Africa is one of the most vulnerable countries when it comes to global warming according to the CSIR and their new climate modelling capabilities.

According to a report on the SABC South Africa is warming up faster that the global average, due to climate change and this will threaten our ecosystems, our ability to create food and our ability to develop socially.

Government however, is dedicated to employing measures that address the consequences of climate change but South Africa’s dependence on fossil fuels for energy hampers this process.

The CSIR’s main researcher Dr Bob Scholes in his new paper on climate change titled the Fifth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change argues that South Africa is getting hotter, faster than the global average.

The report has yet to be published in its entirety.

Specifically, Scholes looked at how the state will adapt its economic sectors, ecosystems and health systems to deal with the consequences of climate change.

Consequences

Scholes argued that managing our agriculture is an effective way to deal with South Africa’s carbon stock. The reality is that South Africa’s policies on global warming fail to adequately address this issue.

According to IOL Scholes also stressed that studies indicate that several life forms, including birds, fish and plants are moving to cooler climates. They are shifting their feeding spaces and migrating to cooler climates where they can sustain their livelihood.
