SAA and SABC crises not on Cabinet agenda

President Jacob Zuma’s Cabinet did not discuss the crisis at beleaguered state institutions such as the South African Airways or the SABC, but noted the death of rugby legend Jonah Lomu.

This was confirmed by Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe today.

“The issue of SAA and SABC did not come up for discussion at yesterday’s meeting but we reiterate our previous statement that we need to improve performance of all state owned enterprises,” said Radebe.

“I just want to make absolutely sure that I get this right. Cabinet discussed the death of Jonah Lomu but you did not discuss the ructions at SAA and the possible need for a government guarantee of between R4 billion to R5 billion which may affect our state coffers?” a journalist asked Radebe.

Radebe said “serious economic issues” were indeed discussed, but that he could not comment on these.

“It was discussed within the context of these financial and economic matters ... and at an appropriate time we will be able to communicate that,” he said.

Earlier, he said that Cabinet had expressed sympathy over Lomu’s death.
