Support matriculants, especially poor performers - KZN premier

Durban - KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu has urged parents and the community to support matriculants awaiting their results, especially those who performed poorly.

In a statement, Mchunu said pupils can easily crack under the pressure associated with the announcement of Grade 12 results.

“Learning is a continual process where no one is a loser,” he said, pointing out that they could still write supplementary exams.

“If for instance, you did not collect the required marks this year, you still have another chance through supplementary examinations, and government is behind you all the way. It is times like these that parents must rise up and take their parental responsibility of supporting their children.”

He said high expectations from the community added to the anxiety matric pupils experienced. "Parents and the community must play this supportive role of assuring, consoling and ensuring that their children are not adversely affected by this situation.”

Mchunu reassured pupils that there will be opportunities for those who "will come out tops when results are announced, and those who will not do well".

During a media briefing on December 30, Umalusi said the 2015 class of matriculants writing the Department of Basic Education’s National Senior Certificate exams performed worse than last year’s class.

The results will be announced on Wednesday and in the Western Cape, on Thursday.
