Two jailed for assaulting Limpopo petrol attendant

Tzaneen – Two Limpopo men have been jailed for the assault on a petrol attendant, the National Prosecuting Authority said on Tuesday.

Hermanus van Dyk, 36, and Danie Le Roux, 29, were sentenced on Monday for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and crimen injuria at the Tzaneen District Court, said regional spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi.

Malabi-Dzhangi said the two assaulted a petrol attendant on July 18 at a garage in Tzaneen after he told the driver that the 95 unleaded petrol was finished.

"The complainant tried to run away to hide himself, but both accused followed him and beat him further. The driver who was in the company of both accused tried to calm the situation, but he failed after both accused over powered him," said Malabi-Dzhangi.

Marius van Dyk and le Roux pleaded guilty.

Van Dyk, received two years, while Le Roux, was handed down eighteen months direct imprisonment.

A CCTV footage which was doing the rounds on social media shows 31-year-old Johannes Monyela being beaten on Saturday night [June 18].

The footage shows three men arriving in a red vehicle.

Monyela has a conversation with the driver. One of the passengers steps out and starts to hit him. The other passenger joins in.

Monyela runs into the staff room. The two follow him inside and the attack continues. A third man, the driver, appears to be trying to break up the fight.

Director of Public Prosecution Advocate Ivy Thenga said: "The occurrence of racial discrimination against any person has reached alarming proportions in our society, it is the duty of this court to stop racism by sending two accused to jail."
