Tshwane – Two white rhino were killed and dehorned on Thursday at the Rietvlei Nature Reserve, the City of Tshwane confirmed in a statement on Friday.
"Despite this unfortunate incident, we echo our voices that we will not to give up on our ongoing battle against rhino poaching in South Africa to ensure that we contribute to fight the battle against poaching," it said in a statement.
Mayoral spokesperson Blessing Manale said the incident had dealt an immeasurable blow to conservation efforts, "amongst a global outcry of the increasing rate of rhino poaching in our protected areas and park in Tshwane and South Africa in general".
Manale said the police were investigating the matter.
"The Reserve has implemented additional security measures with immediate effect and will be closed until further notice."
