Violent protest flares up in KZN

Durban - A group of more than 300 protesters blockaded the M35 Umbumbulu Road, south of Durban, on Monday morning.

They gathered at 05:00 and began erecting burning barricades on the main road through the area, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said.

The M35 is a key route to the province, providing an alternative route to the N3 from Pietermaritzburg to the coast.

“They are complaining about the nomination of a ward councillor. The situation is obviously more complicated than that, but it has something to do with the nomination of someone in that area.”

Zwane said police officers had been sent to the area and were monitoring the situation.

He could not confirm reports that a truck travelling on the road had been waylaid and torched.
