Durban - Bonginkosi Shange’s only offence was that he tried to go to work on Monday.
The 61-year-old rail worker was beaten with sticks, golf clubs and bats, and peppered with rocks by a group of rioters, irked by the ANC’s choice of ward councillor for their area.
CCTV footage of the attack emerged on Tuesday, and shows Shange trying to run for his life on North Coast Road.
Shange was felled by a blow to the head and, while lying unconscious, he was beaten and kicked.
One man turned Shange over and his cellphone fell out of his pocket. Someone else took it.
He said he had no idea why he had been targeted.
"I was just trying to go to my work," he told News24 on Monday.
He said he was forced to take a train from KwaMashu, because all of the taxi routes had been closed.
"I was just walking and they hit me everywhere," he said, pointing to the gaping wounds on his head, lip, and neck.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said they had been made aware of the incident, but that Shange had yet to open a case.
