Johannesburg - Eight Wits University students who were arrested earlier this week during protests were released on free bail at the Hillbrow Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
The charges included contravening a court order, public violence and assault.
They were due back in court on November 2.
At least 60 students were camped outside the Hillbrow Magistrate's Court in support of the eight.
One of the students, Maroli Mathabatha, told journalists his arrest reaffirmed his commitment to free education.
Mathabatha was arrested on Monday at 10:00 and detained at Hillbrow police station, he said.
"I feel good about being released but what matters is that the movement must live."
