Am I a bad friend, brother and son?

The revelations of how many times a former MP and a parastatal CEO visited a certain compound in Saxonwold have made me rethink whether I am a good friend, brother and son.

This is why: Not long ago, I was in Cape Town for a week-long holiday.

I did not call any of my friends in that republic or pop in at their houses for dinner or drinks.

In July, we happened to be in Durban while accompanying my eldest son, who was playing soccer in an Under-13 tournament. We extended the stay after the games ended on the Wednesday, and only visited one friend and brother of mine.

At a walking distance from my sons’ school lives another friend and brother. I last saw him at the end of May when I was coerced to celebrate my birthday.

Another friend and brother, although he lives on the other side of Johannesburg (but still not too far) was last seen at the party.

My father works and lives in Pretoria, while my mother and my siblings are in Mpumalanga.

I see them at least once a month or every second month.

So, the news that then MP Des van Rooyen was in Jozi last December and visited the Gupta family compound for seven consecutive days and that Eskom CEO Brian Molefe and Ajay Gupta had called each other at least 58 times in nine months made me ask myself:

“Am I a good friend and do I talk to or see my friends and family often enough?”

My answer is yes, I am generally a good person and I do not need to see or talk to them daily to show that I care for, adore and love them.

My friends and family know it too.

While we wait for reasons for Van Rooyen’s many visits and Molefe’s calls to a client of Eskom (maybe he was assuring them that the compound wouldn’t be affected by load shedding), I just realised that I hadn’t called my friend and brother who currently lives in Durban and will soon relocate to Tshwane, to welcome him back.
