Romance novels are the most prized books for City Press readers, according to an extensive new survey conducted by Media24’s online research unit, Forum24.

Almost a thousand readers responded to our questions aimed at learning more about our readers’ habits.

Financial self-help and fitness/health reads came in next, followed by South African fiction, with books on faith rounding out the top five.

Political reads, autobiographies and biographies, as well as cookery, were hot on their heels.

Is this a reflection of your interests, too?

We would love to know what you like reading so that we know what reviews and extracts to offer you.

The survey showed increased interest in local fiction and poetry, presumably because of more work by black South African writers (96% of City Press readers are black).

Other interesting findings were a growth in online buying of books and e-books, with only 50% of our book-buying readers still using the printed book exclusively.

Our readers are buying on average four books a year, but are using the library more than they used to.
