A police service for the people

2015-11-30 15:00

As senior management of the SA Police Service (SAPS), we know that the next six months are critical in transforming the SAPS into an organisation every South African can be proud of.

This places a responsibility on everyone in blue to walk the talk and ensure that the public can feel our presence.

Introducing the back to basics of policing approach is a fundamental turning point. The approach occurs in a context of rising police killings, coupled with the public’s concern about police brutality. Police murders are an attack on the authority of the state.

Our members cannot be left on their own without protection. Our message to them is: When you are under attack in the course of executing our mandate, you must function within the parameters of the law. Let us apply proportional force to make irrelevant the perception that police are brutal.

Regarding how we conduct ourselves as police officers, it is critical that we do not step outside the SAPS code of conduct. It is true that some elements in the police act in an unacceptable manner.

The public must play a central role in changing the outlook of the police to ensure we have an SAPS that is responsive to the safety needs of society, one that is known for upholding a high standard of conduct.
