WATCH: Author Paula Hawkins on new dark thriller, The Girl On The Train

2015-05-27 12:50

We speak to British author, Paula Hawkins. She tells us about the writing process behind The Girl On The Train, a book that critics are calling 'the thriller of the year.'WATCH

The Girl on the Train, by first-time author Paula Hawkins, is the fastest-selling hardback crime thriller debut of all time – and the Sunday Times’ number one bestseller and thriller of the year.

A tie-in edition will be launched this week in anticipation of the upcoming Hollywood film release.

Directed by Tate Taylor, the film stars Emily Blunt as protagonist Rachel. Like the book, it is about a woman who sees a shocking event while going past on a train.

Says publisher Penguin Random House of the plot: “Rachel catches the same train every morning.

She knows it will wait at the same signal each time, overlooking a row of back gardens.

"She’s even started to feel like she knows the people who live in one of the houses. ‘Jess and Jason,’ she calls them. Their life – as she sees it – is perfect.

"If only Rachel could be that happy.

"Then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough ... Now Rachel has a chance to become a part of the lives she has only watched from afar.”

"The book has received wide acclaim, with literary icon Stephen King saying: “Great suspense novel. Kept me up most of the night. The alcoholic narrator is dead perfect.”

Hawkins will not be involved in the film production. “I know some people are good at adapting their work, but it would be a risky thing for me – and in any case, I want to get on with writing another novel.”

The film releases in local cinemas on October 7.
