5 air conditioner myths busted

In 1936, the inventor of air conditioning announced this vision: "The average businessman will rise, pleasantly refreshed, having slept in an air-conditioned room. He will travel in an air-conditioned train, and toil in an air-conditioned office."

Fast forward to 2018 and this prediction basically translates to an every-day predicament. From dry eyes and runny noses to aircon office-wars, the battle to control the air-con is as heated (or cooled) as the age-old battle for the car radio, or tv remote.

With a new generation of eco-friendly, wind-free air conditioners unveiled by Samsung at the Mostra Convego Expocomfort 2018 (MCE) in Milan this year, these five myths about aircons can be considered busted.

#1 You can’t sleep with an aircon on

While people may believe leaving a window open or sleeping with the aircon on causes a sore throat, it really depends more on the air quality, according to Dr. Michael Benninger, Chairman of the Head and Neck Institute at Cleveland Clinic.

With some of the latest aircon models, from Samsung you can also opt for wind-free cooling to create the ideal climate for a good night’s sleep – without cold air flow.

#2 Air conditioners will give you a cold

While the cold may make you more vulnerable to illness, a common cold is caused by bacteria not cold temperatures. Dr. Eva Selhub previously told Huffington Post that air conditioners can be beneficial to individuals who suffer from asthma and allergies, as pollen and dust are filtered through the system.

#3 Exercising with the aircon on is bad

Air pollution and other environmental factors can trigger respiratory problems like allergies and asthma. It’s therefore perfectly okay and sometimes better to train indoors, according to the American Lung Association.

If you do put your aircon on while training, try to maintain a comfortable temperature. A good temperature to exercise in is between 19°C and 24°C, according to the operations manager of Virgin Active Gym in the Cape Town Foreshore.

#4 It’s cheaper & better to use a fan than an aircon

The reality is that fans don't cool air - they just move it around. Running a ceiling fan when nobody’s in the room is a waste of energy and money. The best way to save money on cooling your home is to choose an energy-efficient air conditioner and use it sensibly.

Shifting to more energy efficient air-conditioners in South Africa will collectively save 400,000 mega-watts of electricity annually, according to the South African Department of Energy. Aircons like Samsung’s Wind Free range can save up to 68% of the energy used by traditional models.

#5 Low-temperature settings are needed to keep a room cool

Aircon wars are real!
