Look, we know it’s not tea with the queen, but Christmas only comes around once a year – so why not make a bit of an effort? A festive table adds to the merriment, plus you’ll get to practise everything you learnt from Downton Abbey – and impress your guests with your refinement. Just follow these simple rules:

1.      Get the basics right. Forks to the left of the plate, knife then soup spoon to the right. The dessert spoon goes horizontally above the plate, handle pointing right. Make sure the knife’s blade is turned towards the plate – don’t you know it’s impolite to have the blade pointing at other guests? Keep flatware (the fancy term for cutlery) evenly spaced and place glasses to the right of the plate, above the knife.

2.      Break out the linen napkins. Place napkins in the centre of the plate, or to the left under the forks. (Tip: For a special touch, tie napkins with dried herb sprigs instead of using napkin rings.)

3.      Up the wow-factor with a centrepiece. It doesn’t have to be complicated… think candles, fresh flowers, a mini Christmas tree, a poinsettia or even a glass bowl of colourful punch (drinks that double as décor – cheers to that!). Keep the centrepiece low so guests can still see eath other.

4.      Nothing says refined like multiple salt and pepper pots. Plus, less awkward reaching.
