When fast fashion doesn’t have to mean cheap and nasty: why organic cotton is the best money you will spend

CAPE TOWN – In a day and age when “fast fashion” means cheap (synthetic) and nasty (likely bad for the planet or someone in the supply chain), it’s refreshing to find good-quality garments that stand for a little more. As with most things, it all starts with what it’s made of.

The list of the benefits of cotton seems endless. It’s soft, absorbent and breathable, which means it doesn’t trap nasty odours. A renewable resource, cotton is a natural fibre, which makes it biodegradable. And, from a value-for-money perspective, it’s strong and durable, therefore longer lasting if cared for.

Cotton farming has been under global scrutiny, particularly for its use of pesticides, which is why organisations like the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) have emerged. It’s a non-profit organisation that aims to direct global standards for better cotton and bring together farmers and retailers by fostering more sustainable farming practices. It has a wide list of high-end global retail members, such as adidas, Nike, Burberry and local retailer Woolworths.

In 2004, Woolworths launched its first organic cotton range, and a decade later was named the fastest growing retailer in the world to use organic cotton and yarn – according to the Textile Exchange, a non-profit organisation that regulates organic cotton-labelling parameters globally. The assumption is that organic cotton will cost you more, but Woolworths has converted substantial numbers of top-selling items – such as men’s chinos and golf shirts, as well garments in the studio.w and David Jones lines – into organic cotton, so volume offsets additional costs. The retailer estimates that over 500 tons of organic cotton were used in its 2016 autumn/winter lines.

That means that from just R120 you can pick up a men’s or women’s V-neck T-shirt made from responsibly-sourced cotton: a versatile piece that’s working hard for you and the planet. Shop organic cotton online here or in store.
