Voting is a way to have a say in lots of things that affect you, your friends, your family and your community. But before you can vote, you need to register as a voter and get on the voters’ roll.

As a young South African you can register to vote when you turn 16, but you can't vote until you are 18.

Registering to vote is quick and easy!

You just need to visit the voting station for the area where you live during the final registration weekend on 26 or 27 January 2019, present your ID, and fill in a registration form!

What kind of ID? A smart ID card, a green barcoded ID book, or a valid temporary ID certificate.

With nearly 23 000 voting stations planned for the 2019 elections, registration has never been more convenient.

Find your voting station by visiting the IEC’s Voting Station Finder app or message the IEC on Facebook or Twitter (@IECSouthAfrica) with your address or a description of where you live.

You can also download the IEC South Africa app in Android or Apple stores to find your voting station, check your registration status, update your voter’s roll address, and apply for a special vote. You can even use the app to get answers to common questions, and get election results.

The only thing you can’t do online – yet – is to register and vote.

Can’t get to your voting station on the final registration weekend? Make an appointment to register during office hours at your local IEC office. Find your local IEC office at or message the IEC on Facebook or Twitter (@IECSouthAfrica) to find out.

Remember: to be able to vote in the 2019 elections you need to be registered to vote by the time the President announces the election date, as the voters’ roll closes with the announcement.

Once you’re registered to vote, you can vote in any future South African election!

So ask yourself, are you ready to get on the voters’ roll?
