The Sanlam Auditorium building at the University of Johannesburg meant a lot of things to different people – for some it is where they graduated, where they received career guidance and assessment or for others it housed the computer laboratories where they worked on their assignments. But in May 2016, the auditorium was destroyed - gutted by a fire-bomb. The destruction was enormous, for students and faculty affecting the university both emotionally and financially with the damage estimated at R100 million.

"It was designed as a social and intimate space, an escape from the traditional linear auditorium type. Through people's stories on various social media platforms, I was once again reminded of the enormous power of a good design.  So many people's lives have been touched by that dramatic space: from students' graduation ceremonies to colleagues who attended music and drama productions,” Narike Lintvelt, the daughter of the architect of the auditorium, Albert Lintvelt told Netwerk24.

Although the sum of money to be raised was large, alumni such as Advocate Cassie Badenhorst SC came forward and proposed an initiative whereby alumni could join him in raising money to rebuild the auditorium.

While we fully expect the culprits to face the full force of the law for their evil deed, we should embrace the University’s call of #ujbethesolution. I pledge  R 10 000 as seed money and invite my fellow alumni to join in this effort by contributing generously towards the restoration of facilities which are essential for UJ to continue its noble task of passing on skills and knowledge to future generations of South Africans,” Advocate Badenhorst said.

UJ, just like all universities, was built on the success and dreams of the students that passed through their hallways.
