Cupertino - An independent group, the Fair Labour Association, has started auditing Apple's Chinese supplier Foxconn after a request by Apple.

The technology company last month disclosed a list of its suppliers for the iPhone, iPad and other popular gadgets for the first time amid growing criticism over labour and environmental practices, especially in China.

The FLA is a group of companies and universities focused on improving labour practices. Cupertino, California-based Apple joined the group in January.

The FLA's first inspections started on Monday morning at Foxconn City in Shenzhen, China. Apple says other major suppliers will also be inspected later in the spring.

The FLA's findings and recommendations will begin to be posted on in early March.

What do you want us to say, it don't make the iPhone less amazing. Anyway Stinkhout, do you wear Levi or Nike or any other brand make? Go and check where they are made.

Merven, Yes, I do have and wear brands like Breitling and Hublot. My wife buys my clothes and I don’t rely look at the labels. Point about Apple products is that, yes it is good and yes it looks nice, and works but it is overpriced especially given the fact that it is assembled by underpaid slaves.

Jaco, how do you measure your statement of nothing beats Apple products? What can it do that others cannot? And do I need to do it? If Apple made toasters, you would probably buy one.

A noble undertaking by Apple, the truth however is that most first world countries and all major business owners use cheaper Asian countries to manufacture their good for the exact reason Apple has been taking heat, cheaper labor, and maximized profits. This investigation into Apple has nothing to do with labor practices and everything to do with market share and profits of competitors. Hell name a well known brand and I will almost guarantee that they have a plant in one of the poorer Asian centres. Even BMW manufactures cars in South Africa for export only markets because its cheaper to build them here than in Germany. same with almost every single other well known brand
