Apple unveils iPhone 5

2012-09-12 19:50

San Francisco - Apple on Wednesday introduced its new iPhone 5, a lighter, thinner and more powerful version of its iconic mobile device.

"It is an absolute jewel. The software and engineering that went into this product is the most challenging our team has ever taken on," Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller told a packed launch event in San Francisco.

The introduction has been among the most keenly anticipated in the tech world, with rumors and leaks over several months about the new device from the biggest company in the sector.

"It is the thinnest iPhone we have ever made, it's the world's thinnest smartphone and weighs just 112g," just under four ounces, Schiller said.

"It is 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S."

Schiller said the new iPhone features a new design aimed to fit in one's hand and works on the faster mobile Internet networks known as LTE.

"When you carry your phone it should fit beautifully in your hand, that is just how we designed iPhone 5," he said.

"Everything you do looks gorgeous on this beautiful widescreen display."

Analysts expect Apple to sell tens of millions of the new iPhone in the coming months, luring in smartphone buyers who have been waiting to upgrade.

    I want!!

      ron.rielander - 2012-09-12 22:43

@ ricus Just because you can't afford one does not mean others cannot, Apple now the richest company in the world, topping Exon Mobil at 684 Billion USD, that not from designing crap like Samsung.Really ignorant people who know nothing don't use Apple products.

      ebrahim.floris.7 - 2012-09-12 23:05

@the oracle...what exactly do u like about this phone, because other than a sub-standard screen size, what do u actually know about the phone..what has apple told us..well except for you will be able to load your flashless internets twice as fast?

      sam.goldberg.988 - 2012-09-12 23:28

Ebrahim, you realise Flash isn't supported in Jelly Bean?

      ebrahim.floris.7 - 2012-09-13 05:51

@sam touche, lol was afraid of that haha but seriously im so over iphone and im glad...just too retrictive if nothing else

I really don’t understand why people who hate Apple products click on a news article titled : “Apple unveils iPhone 5” and then take their time to comment about it. Take your frustrations to the Malema articles (there’s plenty for you to say there).

      klippies.coke.7 - 2012-09-13 09:51

I think I'll be looking towards Samsung for my next upgrade. I don't see anything anything that excites me with the iphone 5

      Tony Lapson - 2012-09-13 07:31

My favorite part was when Tim Cook said, "The new earbuds were designed to direct the sound into the users ears." Kinda sums up apple and it's customers.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-13 10:41

Here's my favorite: "the new iPhone features a new design aimed to fit in one's hand" No Sh*t Sherlock. And the other phones don't? I'm underwhelmed.

  • joe.leboe - 2012-09-12 20:11

Some peoples hands are larger than others - just ask the workers of Lonmin hehehehe

  • Ditantane - 2012-09-12 20:11

just hope we will not see the french version aka samsung.

      nun.chuck.7 - 2012-09-12 21:40

You do realise that Samsung makes parts for the iPhone right? So what powers a Samsung phone and what powers an iPhone all came from the same factory. People keep commenting that Samsung is asian garbage, but the entire iPhone is also made in asia. Ooohhh, iPhone has a metal casing. Who cares! I don't know a single person that doesn't protect their expensive phone in a plastic cover. That said this phone will probably sell bucket loads, not because its a superior device, but because of its name. Apple's marketing team is pure genius. There aren't too many industries where you can sell an inferior product for more than its competitors and still be a world leader. Kudo's to them I guess.

      suidlander.vanwyk - 2012-09-12 22:50

Dit for your info, Samsung is the market leader in Smartphones, their S3 has outsold anything on the market hence Apple is shivering and suing them left right and center

      rlong1952 - 2012-09-12 23:15

nunchuck, do your research, Samsung does not make parts for the iPhone anymore, Apple dumped them and the parts come from Sharp, LG and from companies in Taiwan. That is what Samsung got for copying them.

      Wolflock - 2012-09-13 06:16

Which still has me wondering why APPLE has not been sued for copying Bill Gate's Tablet.Yup, Bill Was first on that idea.

      nun.chuck.7 - 2012-09-13 08:15

@Saffa in Asia I did do my research. Please read the following article at gsmarena . The article states that just 5 days ago Apple cut back on chip orders from Samsung. They cut back on orders, they didn't cancel their orders. So most of the chips for the iPhone 5 still come from Samsung.

      nun.chuck.7 - 2012-09-13 08:17

@Wolflock. Well HTC is currently suing Apple for using LTE so we will see what comes of that. Personally I don't think they have a chance of suing America's biggest company in America. They could probably win the lawsuit outside of America though, we'll just have to wait and see.

      gerhardus.stefanus.5 - 2012-09-13 08:22

Their is nothing original from Apple. It was never about samsung, it's all about their war against andriod. Apple is just destroying tech by patenting every little thing and yeah they did patent stuff that they didn't invent. They have a great product but their business plan stinks.

      andynct - 2012-09-13 19:24

@Saffa in Asia The A6 processor inside Apple's iPhone 5 mobile phone is a dual-core Cortex-A15 design manufactured for Apple by Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd Apple has only cut back on DRAM memory chips from Samsung but is still dependent on Samsung for the main processor in the iPhone.

  • phillipmongatane - 2012-09-12 20:13

Can't wait to get my hands on it, I hope it sells for less than R10k

      gary.bloom.967 - 2012-09-13 07:18

Selling in the US for $199. R10 says that we're going to get ripped off yet again in South Africa.

      gerhardus.stefanus.5 - 2012-09-13 08:25

@mandlapm69 - They couldn't ban the S3 because of not enough similarities to the Iphone. So according to law not at all the same.

epic failure lol ill stick with samsung thank you.

      lydonmcg - 2012-09-12 21:42

I can only laugh Tuco. The fact that Apple customers "won't even notice" is a very GOOD thing. Most folk couldn't give two hoots about a phone's processor speed, RAM or other specifications, as long as the UI and apps run snappily - the point of having a smartphone. Considering that there was widespread media coverage over the fact that the waterdrop animation of all things occasionally lags on the SIII, I wouldn't start harping on about specifications were I you. Oh, and it's rather ironic that you of all people are accusing others of being fanboys when you're getting so worked up in your hate for the company that is the reason why the smartphone space is what it is today. Get a life! It's a phone!

      Jose - 2012-09-12 22:21

@tshiamo... You have no choice because you're a cheap skate.

      rlong1952 - 2012-09-13 01:53

'epic failure lol ill stick with samsung thank you' So, tshiamo, you have used the new iPhone and so you can make a statement like that? Eish, give me a break, when you have actually used both and compared then you can make statements like that. Really, what a mindless comment.

      tuco.angeleyes - 2012-09-13 09:29

  • Hercules Leonardo Giorgino - 2012-09-12 20:41

Still slower and less battery life than the S3 so no thankyou I will stick with my S3.

      rlong1952 - 2012-09-13 01:56

Really? you have tested them both? ha ha, one of the criticisms of the S3 is its sucky battery life, my old iPhone 4 lasts for 2 days between charges even with heavy use, my friends are forever charging their Samsung's. First test them then make a comment, really, some people!!!

      heinrich.etsebeth - 2012-09-13 06:58

@Saffa: I take a trip from Pretoria to Durban and back listening to music played from my phone over Bluetooth to my car's radio without having to recharge my phone once in the trip. That would include SMS's and phone calls in between to notify people where I'm at. I wanna see you do that on an iPhone... and yes I have played with an iPhone4 and to be honest a thinner phone means a thinner bettery pumping less power that will make you recharge that iPhone5 within 10 hours of moderate usage... Had an iPhone... hated it to bits...

      hlgiorgino - 2012-09-13 07:17

Go and read the specs of the Iphone 5 compared to the Galaxy s3. The S3 totally outclasses the Iphone 5 in performance and battery life. Loyalty has totally blinded you Saffa. But that is okay go and pay more for your inferior phone.

  • sam.goldberg.988 - 2012-09-12 23:26

Some pretty nice features and the big bump in speed and battery life should make it a pleasure to use but, to be honest, I've become a bit bored of the iOS UI. The Android UI is just a variation of that, really. The only phone and OS that's really impressed me recently is the Nokia Lumia 920 and Windows 8. If that phone launches before the iPhone 5 I might end up taking a break from Apple's ecosystem for a while.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-13 10:58

Sam, sorry to burst your bubble. The claimed battery life for the iPhone 5 is EXACTLY the same as for the 4, except for 2 hours more browsing time (read some real tech articles, not just the watered down N24 ones).

      sam.goldberg.988 - 2012-09-13 14:44

@stirrer, from reading Reddit today: they've increased the screen size, doubled the processor speed (rumours of ARM Cortex 15 architecture), reduced the size and weight and yet increased the battery life… so I think I'd call that an improvement, especially if we're running it on 3G over here.

  • luyolo.mhlauli.9 - 2012-09-12 23:26

I expected it to be breathtaking but only its features are.

      Tony Lapson - 2012-09-13 07:58

Which feature is that? The 8mp camera? The slightly longer screen? The 1gig ram? Seems outdated already.

  • stunat101 - 2012-09-12 23:43

Apple are barely keeping up with Samsung, let alone market leaders. Check the specs on and you will see the main things that users want are lacking. Screen size smaller, front camera res'lower and most of all battery life is half that of the S3. Apple has an A6 CPU, S3 has A9, Java support is not there, screen res is lower, alert tones are not supported as good as the S3, NO MEMORY CARD SLOT! And then the misc specs for multimedia and office apps etc are leaders? I don't think so. Since Jobs departure, innovation is lacking and they are trying to keep up

      sam.goldberg.988 - 2012-09-13 06:25

S3 is a nice phone but I disagree with you on the screen argument. I'm upgrading soon and, though I liked the screen size, the thing that put me off the S3 is the crispness of the resolution. The retina display on the iPhone has spoiled me a bit and the first thing I noticed on the S3 is the pixels. I'm not sold on the iPhone 5 yet either, will have to see some reviews first. That Lumia 920 is still looking like the most interesting next gen phone for me.

      sgcrampton - 2012-09-13 07:29

Please note that I loathe apple products, but you sir are bit uninformed and are giving a chance for apple fanatics to attack you... The A6 processor is apples own architecture and made to their specifications and although named similar cannot be compared to arm cortex series of processors(A6 includes cpu and gpu). Java is history as of android jelly bean as HTML 5 is better and taking over even adobe do not offer flash at google play. I do agree with you there should've been some innovation from apple but research first to make your point.

      Tony Lapson - 2012-09-13 07:57

Omg Sam! Thanks for brightening up my morning! That comment was an hilarious twist of how an apple

Just the kind of announcement to get all the jealous anti- iPhone worms crawling out of the woodwork. Saying the S3 is better when they haven't actually seen or used the new iPhone. The old iPhone 4 is smooth, runs like a dream and has a great display, despite being relatively old in technology. It is nice to use than any phone I have ever used, including the much hyped S3. If a two year old phone is that good, how good is the new one going to be. Go back into hiding you wannabe's

Are these people grown ups. Stop fighting guys. It's nice to have choices in life. Pay your money and pick your phone. By the way, indeed Samsung sell more 3G smartphones than Apple but note that Samsung has a huge range of smartphones and Apple just the 1. If compare Galaxy range to iPhone then the picture would change dramatically ........ but who cares. Stop it already.

It's very frustrating not being able to set a song in my music library as a ringtone on the phone, or a alarm tone or something - simple, but verrrry annoying..
