London - Apple on Wednesday unveiled a new iPad with a higher resolution display and an updated version of the Apple TV box used to stream movies, TV shows and other content from the internet to TV sets.

The new iPad screen features 264 pixels per inch, providing the best display ever on a mobile device, Apple executives said during a product presentation in San Francisco broadcast live to reporters in London.

The new iPad - the third version of the touchscreen tablet computer introduced in April 2010 - also features a five-megapixel camera, a faster processor and high-definition video recording.

It will go on sale on March 16 at the same price as the previous models, which start at $499 for the most basic iPad.

Apple said the new iPad will also feature faster 4G LTE connectivity.

"Apple has its feet firmly planted in the post-PC world," Apple chief executive Tim Cook said, adding that "the iPad is reinventing personal computing" and spearheading the "post-PC revolution".

The new Apple TV box, which Apple said features a streamlined new user interface, will sell for the same $99 price as the previous model.

Apple released the first version of Apple TV in 2007 but it has never really caught on with the public.

Pretty awesome changes, but does it warrant a replacement of the iPad 2??? I'm struggling to decide....

      it does

At first glance it doesn't seem like people would be fretting to be in the queue on the 16th of March - but we all know how good Apple is at hype marketing.

Been doing some checking and apparently the new one doesn't support Flash...........problem? i just ordered galaxy 10.1, i have never really been much of an Apple guy. But the screen res sounds very impressive but is that enough of a reason to upgrade?

Gizmo, I don't think it warrants a replacement,no. In other words, if my ipad 2 doesn't explode, I won't be getting a 3. If it dies and I need a new one, then yes. @ Jasoneye - no apple device supports flash (It's not just this one). Never has, never will. That doesn't mean you can't install a third party browser and player that does support flash. If you don't, you won't notice the difference anyway. The 10.1 galaxy tab is good, I know, I had one, but picked up an ipad 2 once and couldn't go back to the galaxy. Everything is so much smoother on an ipad. If you can, cancel your galaxy order and get yourself an ipad. By the way, my ipad is the only apple device in my house, not an apple fan either, but it's hard to ignore the facts.

@Jason Eye - not sure if you made a good choice. Guess what probable Apple gets the screen from Samsung anyway. Lets wait and see what comes up from the Galaxy stable. Maybe you should cancel your order and wait a few weeks.

    Just a more expensive toy

Apple could bring out a turd shaped i-Pad and their zombie followers would be queuing over night to buy one. ;)

      James - 2012-03-08 08:33

Yip, because apple's turd-shaped ipad will be much better than android's turd shaped tab or balckberry's turd shaped playbook. Haters gonna hate.

  • Gert - 2012-03-08 07:40

This will been that the Ipad 2 will (Hopefully) be cheaper.

      JasonEye - 2012-03-08 08:02

In the States they are dropping the ipad2 price by 100 dollars. so i guess once the new one arrives here the price will drop.
