BlackBerry Jam heads to Cape Town

Cape Town - Research In Motion has put a call out to developers in Cape Town to attend the company's BlackBerry Jam event in the city.

The manufacturer is building toward the anticipated release of its BlackBerry 10 smartphones, due for early in 2013.

The hackathon event happens on 3 November and participants will have 10 hours to come up with an idea, business model or app development.

The BlackBerry maker is offering prizes but is also hoping that events such as these will cement its dominance of the South African smartphone market.

BlackBerry has been losing market share to rival running Google's Android operating system and Apple's iPhone in the developed markets of the US and Europe.

The company has been on a charge to build momentum ahead of its release of its BlackBerry 10 smartphone, which many analysts have said is a make-or-break for the Canadian-based firm.

RIM has conducted several BlackBerry Jam sessions around the world in the hopes of attracting more developers to its platform.

"Over 5 000 developers have attended BlackBerry 10 Jam events and more than 5 000 BlackBerry Dev Alpha test devices will be seeded from these events," RIM said.

Those wishing to attend can register on the website.
