BlackBerry maker sees Africa potential

Lagos - The company that makes BlackBerry smartphones is looking to Africa to help its troubled sales.

Officials with Toronto-based Research In Motion told journalists in Lagos on Tuesday that its handsets are the No. 1 choice among those using smartphones in Nigeria and South Africa.

Officials say that in Nigeria alone, its phones represent one out of every two phones in the market, an incredible grip on the market of Africa's most populous nation.

BlackBerry phones remain such a pop culture fascination in Nigeria that it spawned a popular local film BlackBerry Babes.

RIM regional managing director Robert Bose said the company hopes to build on that popularity.

However, the phone manufacturer is beginning to face the same competition here that's seen its market share drop in the West.

i dont understand why people would want another type of phone except a blackberry. Its simple to use and internet is free.I would never choose another handset

Nothing is free. You need to go and try a real phone. Bb does not even come close.

Neal, how can R60pm be "free"? Calculate how much (or little) data you actually use via a phone, and you will see how you are ripped off.

True Mandy. Many handsets might be better but you still pay for evertthing you do with them.Blackberry internet services are for me very reasonable and cost effective.I Love my Blackberry!

Neal, my data usage on my HTC comes to less than R60pm. It's only heavy downloaders (movies etc) that needs more than that, and to do that via a phone is INSANE.

    Guilty as charged

      Spiral - 2012-09-26 08:24

haha! you gotta admit that R60pm for BIS isnt bad... especially if you do some decent downloading! Sometimes its not the phone, but the service that the phone provides that makes it worth it.

The only reason why bb is so popular in SA is because of our extremely high data prices. Man I hate these service providers running a monopoly here! Take away the high data prices and ppl will leave bb in a flash guaranteed. Android or iphone.

This company is RACIST! They are suggesting that only Africa is full of STUPID PEOPLE!

apple and samsung took over market. people don't care in west about blackberry. if Telkom drop price then i promise you nobody will ask for BB. blackberry sucks cos you wait for long long long to open a website in browser. you actually lose R60. thank you
