Earthquake hits near Christchurch

Wellington - A moderate magnitude 5.0 tremor jolted New Zealand's South Island early on Saturday, 21km from the earthquake-devastated city of Christchurch.

Christchurch was rocked on Friday by two powerful 5.8-magnitude tremors in quick succession, which forced evacuations from buildings.

In February, New Zealand's second largest city was hit by a 6.3-magnitude quake that killed 181 people and destroyed much of the downtown area.

Government seismologists said the latest temblor at 06:37 local time was 7.6km deep.

Oh dear. We are praying for you! Just get yourselves to safety is first priority. I’ve experienced a mild tremor once in my life and cannot imagine what you are going through

these guys really need to get there facts straight .there was two after shocks one at 13:58 PM(not 06:37) that was 5.8 (not 5.0) then 80minutes later there was a anther aftershock at magnitude 6.0.

rrdelange is correct. The media in their haste to be the first to get the news out get it often wrong sometimes with adverse consequences. Guys check the facts befor you broadcast.

I lived in South Africa in the seventies when tere was some earth tremors. Even in Knysna where I stayed it was very disturbing althou the epic center was somewhere in the western cape. It breakes my heart to watch on TV the children in tears. They dont realy understand what's happening and relay on the grownus which them'selves sometimes get disoriendated special during the big one's as in ChristChurch.

Remember a Richter measue is logarithmic, meaning that a Richter magnitude 2 is not twice as big as a magnitude 1. It's TEN times bigger. And a magnitude 3 is again ten times bigger than a magnitude 2, and so on. By the time you reach a mag5 or -- heaven's forbid -- a mag6, you're looking at a quake releasing several times more violent energy than any nuclear bomb.

New Zealand is an island, won't all these constant earthquakes cause enough damage so that eventually the island disappears into the ocean?

      Louis - 2011-12-24 21:24

No, the earthquakes are due to tectonic processes, which actually builds land. The Southern Alps are rising by about 40 mm/year. Google "subduction zone"

The earth giveth and the earth taketh away. Without continental drift we would not have had land to live on in the first place. But the same process unfortunately also frequently vigorously shakes that land.

I don't know much about God or earthquakes but i do know this: if one's life is in mortal danger, GET OUT OF THE WAY! Why people live in this perilous place by choice I will never know. It's like they WANT their lives to be a misery.
