Facebook crosses 1bn user threshold

2012-10-04 14:07

New York - Facebook said on Thursday that it now has more than one billion users, in a new milestone for the world's biggest social network.

Co-founder Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement, saying the number is "humbling".

"This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month," he said.

"If you're reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honour of serving you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life."

Interviewed on the NBC Today show, he called the milestone "unbelievable".

"To be able to come into work every day and build things that help a billion people stay connected with the people they care about every month, that's just unbelievable," Zuckerberg said.

an amazing story with almost no ending... thanks for helping the world for free. Very rare in today's very competitive world. May many benefits come their way to the team.

What I don't understand why is there is so much misery in the world when everyone on facebook seems to have the perfect lives?

      tiaan.fourie - 2012-10-04 15:01

@R3ndi3r - It's pretty obvious that Facebook makes money, otherwise they wouldn't exist. What Raymond meant was that to use Facebook itself is free.

I dont believe there are 1 billion active users every month, maybe a few hundred million but never a BILLION, he is lying to make FB look more attractive to advertisers & businesses. The article conveniently left out the fact that many people have more than one profile & that probably 2 in 5 users have created a phantom accounts to hide their true identity.. If you wana see what im talking about, just visit the comments part of any story here in news24 & see how many people, that post comments via FB, hide the profile info or have little or no info about them there at all.. Its all just a lie...

How many of those facebook accounts are active? And how many of those accounts are fake?

      Dave - 2012-10-04 14:38

Not fake but inactive, they then, just before their share offering made all these inactive accounts part of your friends list again....added hundreds of friends back onto peoples profiles.

      tony.kirby1 - 2012-10-04 14:39

I know people who have up to 3 accounts. But only use one. Then their are many more with 2 accounts, but with only one active. But still a moerse lot of people in the world on this site.

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-10-04 14:41

Fake also. Guys posing as girls. Married people posing as single. Children not old enough to have an account creating one. All you need is a fake Google email. CNN says 83 million fake accounts.

mmm I wonder if this is a absolute no 1 billion, or if they excluded the fake profiles, dog profiles, memorial profiles, not to mention... those profiles used by people to post on News 24.

Carla Houze So how about this announcement!: Facebook finally disclosed the fact (which I have been saying all along :/) that only 10% of our posts are seen by friends and people that Like Pages (no surprize there). They announced that they are going to implement that if you want to see more posts you will have to pay for it. Yes, that's right! You heard it correctly! FB is not free and has not been free for a while. So in actual fact it is like having to pay to spend time with your friends and/or having to pay to visit a shop (Page of a business). Not cool. They are not happy to just let the businesses (Pages) pay for adds and pay to get people to see more of their posts, no the actual clients (FB users like you and me) now have to pay to be able to spend time with each other and to go into a shop. Share this if you want to with friends. I am sure they will be thrilled :/ (Mmmmm so lets just have a look at this...Google+ is free, Skype is free. Sorry FB maybe not such a good idea after all)
