Felix Baumgartner goes supersonic

2012-10-14 20:49

Roswell - Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner has become the first man to break the sound barrier during a freefall from space.

He set the record as he plunged 39km, also the record for the highest manned balloon flight, back to earth during a freefall of just under five minutes after being lifted into space in a capsule attached to a helium balloon.

There is so little air in the upper reaches of the atmosphere, that after 30 seconds of freefall, Baumgartner was moving faster than the speed of sound, which is roughly 1 110km/h at that altitude.

He surpassed the highest flight record previously held by Commander Malcolm D Ross and Lieutenant Commander Victor A Prather, Jr at 34 668m set in Strato-Lab 5 during 1961.

Baumgartner lifted off from Roswell in New Mexico about two-and-a-half hours before he jumped.

Maybe this European agent must jump from the \Revolutionary House\ next and make Malema smile one last time before they lock him up! Lol

      george.slade.161 - 2012-10-14 21:17

Rather let Malema junmp--no strings attached.

He must have had some serious butterflies in his belly when he was standing on the edge on that capsule!

      frank.cornelissen.1 - 2012-10-14 21:17

Truly inspirational. Makes me wonder, 'if a man 20 years older than me is still doing stuff like that, why am I not challenging MY limits? It's guys like them that inspired me to learn the gymnastic planche position (despite my height and age) and actually making good progress...

  • hussein.diedericks - 2012-10-14 21:25

  • BatongaBoro - 2012-10-14 22:38

never mind the sheer exhillarating thrill of watching that and the joy of seeing him land safe and sound, the data that they will have recorded will be of huge significance for medical science and industry. for a man to break the sound barrier in a complex but simpler than a vehicle suit is extraordinary. who knew that someone would end up going a lot faster than Usain Bolt this year!

  • BatongaBoro - 2012-10-14 22:41

@tumisang.kolobe "I personally won't mind going back to the village, life in an African perspective was always enjoyable, there was no traffic,no comumerism, crime, air pollution, industrialization, I want my land back so I can move away from the urban area and live in my farm, I have claimed my ancestors land back for farming." you still seem to be running electricity, a computer or a phone and the internet. not a good start to getting back to what you want life to be like. try again.

      goldwright - 2012-10-15 00:43

It's amazing isn't it. Those who complain about this awful consumeristic/industrialized life, are those who are happy enough to still make use of all it's conveniences........
